Based on a true story, Hachikō (or commonly referred to as Hachi) is a fictional dog and one of the main protagonists of the film, Hachi: A Dog's Tale. The film is based off the famous story of Hachikō, a dog who waited nine years for his owner to come back. Based loosely off the story, Hachikō is an Akita dog, and the owner of professor Parker Wilson, who found and adopted Hachikō.

After Wilson suffered an abrupt heart attack and dies in the middle of teaching, Hachikō is seen waiting for his owner to come back, but to no avail. Lying on the same spot for hours, he would return to the same spot every day for nine years, waiting for the first glimpse of his owner, until Hachikō died nine years later, in 1935.
